There’s lots of great SFHG stuff coming up, here are the deets:

1) SFHG Monthly Meeting at Anchor Brewing on Tuesday, June 18th from 5:30-7:30

This month we have a very special guest coming to speak to us! “Bison Dan” Del Grande, the owner and head brewer of Bison Brewing, will be on hand to talk to us about using local and organic ingredients in brewing and will answer any brewing or industry related questions. Here’s a bit about Dan from his Bison Brewing site:http://bisonbrew.com/about-us/. As usual, feel free to bring some homebrew to share and get comments on. Chris will have the feedback for those who entered the IPA & Cali Common comp and will have announcements about upcoming SFHG activity. As usual, the meeting is free for paid members, but we ask visiting nonmembers to put $5 in the bucket to support the SFHG. RSVP here: http://www.meetup.com/San-Francisco-Homebrewers-Guild/events/114822792/

2) SFHG Celebrates Belgian Independence Day Competition – entries due by August 11

A reminder about our next comp, celebrating Belgian Independence from the Netherlands, is on the horizon. We’re holding a category 16C – Saison competition. This is an AHA-BJCP certified competition and will be judged according to 2008 BJCP Style Guidelines. Winners will be announced at an SFHG Event/Homebrew share (location TBD) Saturday, August 17. Note – we had so many entries to judge in the last comp that going forward, the SFHG comps will be limited to a single category and entries will only be accepted from paid SFHG members (another good reason to join up!).

3) Northern California Homebrewers Festival – ticket purchase organizing

The SFHG is going to rep San Francisco at the NCHF this Sept 20th & 21st. Here’s the issue, the SFHG can’t just buy a bunch of tickets for the group (a single person can buy 4 and you need to have a name for each ticket). The NCHF sells out in literally a few minutes when the tickets go on sale. The online store for the Festival will open July 14 at 10AM! If you’re planning to go, you better be ready to pouce! We’ll discuss this and organize a few purchasers at the monthly meeting on Tuesday. If you’re positive that you’re going to grab tickets, please let me know so we can plug in some folks to give you money to grab them a ticket as well. Again, tickets go on sale July 14th at 10AM here: http://www.nchfinfo.org/

4) Northern California Homebrewers Festival – Team Captains Needed for the Club Keg Comp!

We are looking forward to the SFHG attending the Northern California Homebrewers Festival September 20th & 21th at Lake Francis Campgrounds near Dobbins, California. We need to start making some plans for our participation now! One of the main events of the weekend is the Club Keg Competition where we’ll have the opportunity to put ONE keg representing our club on tap in the main festival tent to be pitted against every other club’s beer at the festival – the BJCP category for this year is #23 – Specialty Beer. To select that one keg, we want to run a team competition within the club. We are looking for four brewers to be “Team Captains” for this event. As a Team Captain, you will collaborate on a Specialty #23 beer recipe and host a brew day for your team to bring that brew to life. Here are the requirements to be a Team Captain:

1) Ability to brew 8+ Gallons on your system (since we need one keg for our internal comp and another to bring to NCHF)

2) Willing to host a brew day at your house sometime soonish or in early July

3) Beer must be ready by August 17th when you must bring enough to share (2-3 gallons) to be voted on by club members at our Belgian Beer Competition Results/Homebrew Share Event, location TBD

4) Ability to reserve a 5-Gallon Corny Keg of the Specialty Beer for entry at the NCHF in September if your team’s beer is selected by the club at our August event! If you are unable to attend the NCHF in September, the club can take your team’s winning beer to the fest for you. If you’re interested, let me or Kevin know ASAP so we can work out details with you. We are aiming to have FOUR teams make beers for this collaboration comp, respond ASAP to help lead your team to victory! For details about the NCHF Club Keg Competition, go to http://www.nchfinfo.org/festival-info/club-keg-competiton.html

Other Important Info + Volunteer Opportunities:

* SFHG Barleywine Comp, Feb 2014

The SFHG is judging barleywines in Feb 2014. We’ll be accepting both American and British style barleywines for the comp. We first announced this several months ago, but wanted to remind everyone again because these beers take many months to mature. If you want to enter this comp, starting thinking about brewing it up soon!

The SFHG kicked off the 2013 summer BBQ season and paid a bit ‘o “Tribute to America” in Golden Gate Park this Saturday. At the BBQ we announced the winners of our BJCP-AHA registered SFHG Tribute to America Competition covering two styles – California Common and American IPA. We had 60 (mostly) amazing entries! At the picnic we also voted on our favorites of the day and awarded two “People’s Choice” ribbons. Lots of friends, food, and homebrew, plus unbelievable weather for SF. Altogether it was a fantastic get together and as good as it gets for launching into summer! Check out more pics and info about the SFHG on our Meetup page (http://www.meetup.com/San-Francisco-Homebrewers-Guild/), SFHG Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/sfhomebrewersguild), or poke around here on our website (http://sfhomebrewersguild.com/).

Summer in San Francisco has definitely arrived! Time for warm weather, hang out sessions at Dolores Park, picnics, wheat beers, and beer festivals! The SFHG and our friends around the Bay are planning all sorts of good times for you this summer. Here’s a list of some of what’s coming up.

****Tribute to America Homebrew Entries are due Sunday May 5th at SF Brewcraft! Details of how to enter can be found here.

****SFHG Tribute to America Picnic in Golden Gate Park – Kick off the summer BBQ season and pay “Tribute to America” with the SFHG in Golden Gate Park on Sat, May 18th! This event is open only to paid members of the San Francisco Homebrewers Guild and their personal guests (e.g., friends and family). If you are not currently a paid member of the SFHG, simply go to http://sfhomebrewersguild.com/sign-up/ to join! Being a member of the Meetup group does not make you a member of the SFHG, you need to go to the link above and sign up and pay annual dues…trust me, it’s worth it, membership has its privileges, including our monthly meetings at Anchor Brewing!

Members will meet at Lindley Meadow picnic areas #1 and 2. SFHG will provide charcoal, plates, cups, etc. — bring what you like to throw on the grill and a side dish for other brewers to share. If you have a small hibachi-type grill (gas or charcoal) that will sit on top of a picnic table, please bring it to help us increase our grill space. You’re also welcomed and encouraged to bring picnic games – beanbag toss, hill-billy golf, badminton, etc. if you like. Kids are welcome – we are in a park after all!

In addition to grilling and hanging out, we’ll of course share homebrew, so bring your competition and non-competition beers! We’ll also:

- Announce the winners of our SFHG Tribute to America California Common and American IPA competition.

- Attendees will vote for the “Peoples’ Choice Award” for the competition beers.

- Attendees will vote for the “Peoples’ Choice Award” for all other non-competition style beers that brewers bring to share that day.

We’re allowed to have bottled beer, please NO KEGS as this is against GG Park rules. Again, the picnic is open to our dues-paying SFHG members, not the general public – if you’re not a member yet, go tohttp://sfhomebrewersguild.com/sign-up/ to sign up and join us in the park.

****Intro to Homebrewing Class with SFHG Pres Chris Cohen (that’s me!) on May 30th at the Ferry Building, hosted by CUESA and Urban Kitchen SF. The class is $70 but everyone gets a $40 gift cert to SF Brewcraft so you can get brewing ingredients or put it toward a starter kit. If you want to learn brewing basics, come brew with me!

****AHA Big Brew Day - This Sat, May 4th. AHA Big Brew is a celebration of National Homebrew Day (May 7). Each year homebrewers around the world invite family and friends to their brewing site on the first Saturday in May to celebrate the holiday. Everyone is encouraged to help out with the brew, enjoy the fun and join in on a world-wide toast at noon CDT.

****Eating About Beer Potluck – Our friends from Eating About Beer are putting together a homebrew-themed potluck on July 28, and are looking for interested brewers to participate. See the Eventbrite invitation for more details. An excerpt from the page:

* The purpose of the event is to showcase the possibilities of pairing food and beer. Each brewer or brewing team (that’s you!) will get their own station. You will set up your keg or bottles in the middle, and the pairing dishes will be placed around them.

* Where do the dishes come from? Well, you get to invite your friends to cook food that pairs with your beer! We would ideally like each beer to have 2-5 dishes to pair with them, so invite accordingly.

The event is free, but donations will be collected at the door to benefit a local community organization. Check out the Eventbrite page for more details and to RSVP: http://www.eventbrite.com/event/6374597593

****Hops & History Night on Thursday, May 23rd at the old Mint, hosted by The SF Museum and Historical Society & SF Brewers Guild. Get tickets and details at http://hopsandhistory.eventbrite.com/. Use the discount code sfhg10 for $10 off the ticket price.

The SFHG is turning 1, come celebrate with us!

We launched the SFHG during SF Beer Week last year with a Homebrew Share at Pi Bar, one of SF’s premier craft beer purveyors. The SFHG did a ton over the last year, one thing that always rocked was the awesome crowd and amazing brews at each of the Homebrew Shares we’ve done at Pi Bar!

At this Homebrew Share we will announce the winners of the SFHG Winter Spiced Beer Competition (as chosen by a panel of six qualified judges, most BJCP ranked or Certified Cicerone). We’ll also be awarding the People’s Choice, everyone gets a vote, so definitely bring enough homebrew to share with everyone.

A measly $15 to Pi Bar gets you all the pizza and salad you can eat and covers them for opening during non-business hours just for our event. Have you had their pizza? This is a steal, my friends. I expect we’ll have a crowd, so get there at noon!

The SFHG website has an entire page dedicated to the new SFHG Homebrewer of the Year Competition Series. Go there for info on how points are allocated, how tie breakers are handled, and for additional information on the various competitions that homebrewers can submit to in order to earn points toward the SFHG HOY award.

Do you have what it takes to be named the SFHG Homebrewer of the Year in 2013? The SFHG is holding four homebrew competitions in 2013, in which we will judge seven different BJCP style categories. Three of these competitions will be BJCP sanctioned. Points earned by club members in the club competitions, plus points earned by placing in certain outside competitions, are added up to determine who is the SFHG Homebrewer of the Year. The winner will have their name engraved on the SFHG HOY trophy cup and will bask in the adulation of their peers. Brewers must be a paid annual member of the SFHG to be eligible for the SFHG HOY Award.

In addition to the four SFHG club-only competitions, Guild members may earn points toward the SFHG HOY award by placing in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd (or winning Best of Show!) in any BJCP beer or mead style category in the Bay Area Mashers “World Cup of Beer” or any of the three events used to determine the State of California “Sierra Nevada Homebrewer of the Year,” which includes the Mayfaire Competition, the California State Fair, and the California State Homebrew Competition.

2013 SFHG Competitions

SFHG Winter Warmer/Holiday Spiced Beer Competition– Entries due no later than January 31. Beers will be judged according to the 2008 BJCP Style Guidelines for style 21B – Christmas/Winter Specialty Spiced Beer. Winners will be announced during SF Beer Week at a Pi Bar Homebrew Share event on Sunday, February 17.

SFHG Tribute to America Memorial Day Competition – BJCP sanctioned competition. Entries due no later than May 3. To kick off SF’s cool American summer, brewers may brew one or both of the invented-in-America beer styles we chose for this competition. The categories are: the beer that made San Francisco famous, 7B – California Common, as well as that iconic American brew, 14B – American IPA. Winners for each style will be announced at an SFHG Pre-Memorial Day BBQ/Picnic (location TBD) Saturday, May 18.

SFHG Celebrates Belgian Independence Day Competition – BJCP sanctioned competition. Entries due no later than July 16. To honor Belgium’s Independence from the Netherlands on July 21, 1831, brewers can brew the farmhouse favorite 16C – Saison. Winners will be announced at an SFHG Event/Homebrew share (location TBD) in August 2013.

SFHG Return to our Brewing Roots Competition – BJCP sanctioned competition. Entries due no later than October 18. To honor the enormous influence of European countries on popular American beer styles, brewers may enter the roasty favorite with a British background, 12B – Robust Porter. Winners will be announced at an SFHG Event/Homebrew share (location TBD) late in 2013.

2014 SFHG Competitions

SFHG Winter Barleywine Fest – That’s right, we’re giving you notice over a year in advance — for our SF Beer Week competition in February 2014 we will be judging Barleywine! We’re mashing 19B – English Barleywine and 19C – American Barleywine together into one general Barleywine category, so get brewing now and give them time to mature. Points earned in this competition will count toward the 2014 SFHG Homebrewer of the Year award.
